Five Tips For Storing Family Photos

Letitia Lucas

Storing family photos in a self-storage facility is an extremely good idea because of the protection from fires, flooding, and more. If you have many family photos that are simply being stored somewhere in boxes in your home, it's time to consider moving them to self-storage for their protection. Here are five tips to help you get started on this:

  1. Consider Climate Control: When it comes to storing old photos, you want to consider a climate controlled unit. This is because humidity can seriously damage your photos even if you have them stored neatly in boxes. The humidity will ruin them because it will cause them to warp and stick together.
  2. Wear Gloves: When you are going through your photos, you should consider wearing gloves. You may want to dig through the photos at some point to find specific ones and during this time you should wear gloves. This is because our fingers contain natural oils that are going to stick to the photos and cause damage if they are then left to sit in storage after being handled. So be sure that you bring gloves with you whenever you plan to rifle through the photos.
  3. Keep the Photos Organized: It's best to organize the photos you have by date or in some other way that works for you. This way, you don't have to rifle through too many photos when looking for specific ones, which can just cause unnecessary damage. Instead, be sure that before you even put them in storage, they are well organized.
  4. Use Albums: Instead of storing in boxes, you should consider organizing the photos in albums instead, which may take longer when it comes to getting the photos organized, but it will ensure that the photos last much longer. Plus, when you go to look for specific photos, the photos will be protected by the clear film. With the added protection of you also wearing gloves, this can go a long way.
  5. Remember, It's Worth It: There is no amount of money that can replace the photos you have of your friends and family. These aren't something you can easily get back. For this reason, it's important to always remember that paying for storage is well worth it. Storage facilities are often much safer for family photos because of the quality of protection from fire, flood, and other elements. This is especially important to remember if you live in a flood or fire zone.
