3 Factors You Should Consider When Preparing Your Items For Storage

Letitia Lucas

There are many benefits that come with choosing to store items you do not use all the time in a self-storage unit. For instance, the use of off-site storage will allow you to eliminate clutter and maximize the amount of living space that your home has to offer. However, in order to ensure that all of your stored items remain in good condition, there are a few factors that you will need to keep in mind when preparing these items for storage

Pest Control

The first factor you will want to keep in mind when preparing your items for storage is the issue of pest control. Self-storage units can often provide a very attractive habitat for many different pests such as mice, moths, and roaches. This is because many common pests prefer dark, quiet spaces that provide them with ample hiding places and a food source. If you do not take care when packing your belongings for storage, these items that you wish to keep safe can easily provide both the hiding place and food supply that these pests are looking for. Using airtight and waterproof containers when packing smaller items can help to prevent pests from getting inside them. You may also want to consider using waterproof covers for furnishings and other large items.

Extreme Temperatures And Humidity

The temperatures and humidity levels inside a self-storage unit can fluctuate dramatically during the year. While some storage facilities offer climate-controlled units, many storage units will not offer this feature. If your unit is not climate controlled, you will need to take steps to ensure that your stored items are protected from the potentially extreme conditions inside your unit. Using packing materials that help to insulate your items can help to prevent temperature-related damage. This is especially important if you plan to store items that are sensitive to temperature swings such as electronics, wood furniture, or products that contain liquids.

Gravity

People often remember to think about the effects of gravity when they are loading items into their storage unit. For instance, individuals will avoid placing a heavy dresser on top of a mattress because they understand that the weight of the dresser pressing down on the mattress over time will cause the mattress to be damaged. Unfortunately, while this issue is often addressed when packing items into a storage unit, it is often overlooked when packing items for a storage unit. When packing your items remember to keep the effects of gravity in mind and ensure that heavier items are not placed on top of lighter or more fragile items inside of your boxes.
